Computer classes taught in the Computer Center of the Hudson Library & Historical Society are designed to introduce participants to computers, the Internet, its contents, and its uses. The Computer Center is located on the second floor.

 BASIC INTRODUCTION TO EXCEL

This class is designed for any individual who is new to Microsoft Excel and is using any version issued from 1997 through 2003.  The focus for this class will be on understanding the function of spreadsheet software and on providing an overview of the capabilities of the program.  Attendees will learn what the various elements of Excel are called and what function they perform.  They will also learn how enter text and values and how to move around within both worksheets and workbooks.  Finally, students will learn how easily the appearance of what they create can be enhanced using the formatting tools available within all Microsoft Office tools.

Gary Fitzmartin, a Microsoft Certified Excel Expert, who has instructed more than 75,000 individuals on the capabilities of this software, will teach the class.



 BASIC PHOTO EDITING WORKSHOP
 
Handouts: Photo Editing Functions ; Photo Formats ; Setting Up an Account ; Using Photoshop
Have you been wanting to edit the digital photos you’ve taken--to remove the red eye, to lighten the under-exposed shots, or to crop out the distracting background--but you don’t want to spend $$ on purchasing photo-editing software?  This class will cover these basic photo editing tasks as well as touchup, rotating, sharpening, and converting to black & white using a FREE web-based program available at www.photoshop.com.   Prerequisite:  Those who sign up for this class should have their own email account and be familiar with uploading and downloading files to/from the internet.



 BASICS OF EXCEL FORMULAS AND FUNCTIONS

This class is designed for any individual who wishes to use Microsoft Excel to perform basic mathematical calculations such as addition and subtraction.  Also covered will be calculating average values, counting entries, identifying the largest or smallest value in within a range of numbers and much, much more.  The class is taught using the 2003 version of Excel, however the functions perform identically in all versions of the software from 1997 through 2007.  The focus for this class will be on practical applications of these Excel tools.

BEGINNING COMPUTERS : INTERNET :  EMAIL  Handouts: Computers ~ Internet ~ Email
Beginning Computer classes are especially designed for individuals who have never used a computer before.  Classes are slower paced and are the building block for the rest of the computer classes offered at Hudson Library & Historical Society.


 BEGINNING ACCESS
Learn the basic functions of Access and the practical applications of this database program.  This class is designed for the computer user who is familiar with using a computer and has a working knowledge of EXCEL.

Learn the basic functions of Excel and the practical applications of this powerful spreadsheet and financial management tool.  This class is designed for the computer user who is familiar with using a computer such as: mouse skills; saving and opening files or one who has taken the Beginning Computer series.


 BEGINNING POWERPOINT Class Handout
This class is designed for the computer user who is familiar with using a computer such as mouse skills; saving and opening files; cutting & pasting; using pictures or who has taken the Beginning Computer series and/or Beginning Word.  PowerPoint is part of the Microsoft Office suite used for visual presentations.


 BEGINNING WORD Class Handout
Learn the basics of Word-the toolbars, the menu bars; inserting, deleting, copying, re-sizing, and manipulating text and objects. This class is designed for the computer user who is familiar with using a computer such as: mouse skills, saving and opening files or has attended the Beginning Computer series.

 

 

DIGITAL CAMERAS MADE EASY

This course will consist of three classes over a three consecutive weeks.  Each class will be around ninety minutes in duration. The class will be taught by Larry Schmersal. 

This is intended to be a basic digital camera class.  The goal is to help each student to learn how to control their camera and to obtain the best possible image over a wide range of lighting and other real world situations.  Each class will include some “hands on” working with your camera.  We will also look at “problem photos” to diagnose what went wrong.  And last we will learn from “Tips for Great Photos”.  The three classes  will focus on the following subjects:

         Pixels – How many do I need? How many do I have?  How can I change them?
·
         Image Quality – What effects image quality & how can I control it?
·
         ISO (film speed) – What is ISO & where when & how can I change it?
·
         Exposure Compensation – What is E/C and how & when can I change it?
·         Depth of Field – What is DOF and how & why do I want to control it?
·
         Fill in Flash – What is fill in flash and how & when do I use it?
·
         Macro Photography – The art of photographing small subjects.

Each student is encouraged to bring their camera and operating manual to all the classes.  Also each student should bring a USB Flash Drive to all classes.  It will be used to both bring to class student images and to take from class copies of the presentation notes




EXCEL For the Business Professional Handouts: Top 50 Tips Sample Worksheets

This program is being taught by Gary Fitzmartin, a Microsoft Certified Excel Expert who has instructed more than 75,000 individuals in the art and science of efficiently utilizing the tools provided in the Excel Software Program.  The 2-hour class is designed for individuals who understand the basics of the software and who need to better understand how to use Excel to get data to tell a better story.  This would include such tools as sorting, filtering and subtotaling data, quickly creating charts and graphs, how to utilize lookups to automatically search for data, understanding basic formatting and text tools to enhance document appearance and how to use the PivotTable tools to create reports in seconds that have historically required hours.



HOW TO CREATE A HOLIDAY NEWSLETTER IN PUBLISHER
This class will show you how to use Microsoft Publisher to design your holiday newsletter.  Learn how to place your photos, insert titles and text boxes on a page layout so that you have a decorative and informative letter to send to family and friends!  (prerequisite: students signing up for this class must have taken "Introduction to Microsoft Publisher" class or have familiarity with creating/manipulating graphic objects in Publisher.)

INTRODUCTION TO MICROSOFT OFFICE 2007

This class is designed for individuals who are making the transition from an earlier version of any Microsoft Office software to the new 2007 product OR who are new to Microsoft Office software and want to understand what is new, where things are found and what the advantages and disadvantages of the new program may be for different users.  While the formal class will run for slightly less than 90 minutes, attendees are encouraged to bring specific examples of material they may be working on and with which they would appreciate some help.  The last 30 minutes of the class will be set aside for these challenges.

 ORGANIZING YOUR COMPUTER (& EMAIL) with Windows Explorer    Class Handout
Is your computer cluttered?  Is your 'Inbox' overflowing?  Have you lost items on your hard drive or in your email box?  This is the class for you!  Participants will be shown how to use Windows Explorer to organize files and folders on their computers, plus how to use their 'electronic filing cabinet' more efficiently.  These organizational skills will also be demonstrated on how to organize email folder for greater efficiency.

Have you been noticing those hardbound photobooks that make wonderful keepsakes of memories captured on a digital camera?  Want to make a photobook of your own with photos of your precious grandbaby, or your daughter's dance recital, or your son's athletic season, or your parents' wedding anniversary celebration, or some other special memory?  If your answers are YES, come and learn how you can become a photobook author using FREE software! (note: purchase of a photobook is optional).

Prerequisite:  Students should know how to use a computer, how to access, open, close, and save files, and how to use a mouse.  Students should bring with them a CD or thumb drive containing at least 10 digital photos.

 


 PHOTOSHOP MADE EASY Flash Drive Required for Class Handouts: Class 1 ~ Class 2 ~ Class 3

Instructor:  Larry Schmersal

Course Description: The goal of this course is to teach an interested digital photographer & computer literate student how to use some very useful digital image editing techniques.   This is an introductory class to Adobe Photoshop Elements.  The “Elements” program is very similar to other digital image editing programs so the knowledge gained should prove to be useful with other programs.

This course consists of three classes.
Individual Class Content:
Class 1)       Transferring, Saving, Storing Images, Image quality & format,
Class 2)       Simple digital image content changes – lighting, redeye, shadows/highlights, brightness, contrast, cropping
Class 3)      Complex digital image content changes – Taking things out and putting new stuff in.  Making the image the way you wish it was.

The Computer Center is located on the second floor.  Class size is limited. Registration is required by
registering in person at the Reference Desk with a $5/per class refundable deposit.
If class size is below minimum, the class will be cancelled and attendees will be notified 3 days to the class.
There is a 48 hour cancellation requirement for the return of the $5 deposit.
